Hamburg Township

Hamburg Township is a very progressive community. It was founded in 1837 and is now the fastest growing community in Livingston County. As of the 2000 census it had a population of 20,627. It is served by three school districts with Pinckney serving about 90 percent of the township, Brighton serving about 9% percent in the northeast corner of the township, and Dexter serving about 1% along the southern boundary of the township.

For the last 10 years the majority of new residential developments have used the township’s Open Space Zoning, which provides for reserving at least 40% of the property as open space which can consist of play or sports areas, buffers, trails, woodlands or wetlands. Open Space Zoning is recognized throughout Michigan and the US as a very progressive way to handle growth. This type of progressive development protects and enhances both the new properties and existing properties in this in this community.

Hamburg has also installed a sewer system that currently serves a significant portion of the areas surrounding the lakes in the township. This system continues to expand to serve the remaining lakes and to preserve the environment within the township.

A large part of the northern portion of the township is State of Michigan owned land which includes the Brighton State Recreation Area . Hamburg Township also has 300 acres of township owned land devoted to recreation in "Manley Bennett Park" on Merrill Road. In addition to the walking trails and natural preserved areas in this recreation area, the Township also provides an up to date outdoor soccer facility with a large number of modern soccer fields serving all ages. The complex has a baseball area with over 6 diamonds providing both soft and hardball for children and adults. Football has a large modern field along with practice areas serving that sport.

There are currently three golf courses located within the Township. Lakeland Golf and County Club a private club on Chilson Road. Whispering Pines Golf Course a public course off of McGregor Road, and Rush Lake Golf Club on Rush Lake Road
